Deep in the mountains of Yunnan Province near the Myanmar border lies Wengding, widely recognized as China’s last primitive tribe. In early 2026, seasoned explorer and 2019 Adventurer of the Year Paul Wong set out to document this isolated enclave. Reaching it requires a long, monotonous drive through winding mountain passes and uneventful forests—but at the end of the road lies a place shrouded in history and contradiction.
Founded over 400 years ago, this historic Wa minority village was entirely destroyed by fire in 2021. It has since been meticulously rebuilt to its original authenticity, but with a twist: the government transformed it into an uninhabited cultural tourist destination heavily subsidized by a Shanghai-backed poverty alleviation initiative.
In this gripping presentation, Paul goes past the tourist facade to reveal:
- The Evolution of the Headhunters: A look into the tribe’s pre-1958 human sacrifice rituals and how those customs morphed to meet the modern era.
- Political Transformation: How outside political operatives reshaped an ancient tribal mindset, and what life looks like for the displaced villagers today.
- The Insider’s Guide to China: In time allows, Paul will share practical, boots-on-the-ground strategies to seamlessly navigate independent travel throughout China without the usual struggles.
