Freediving: From Novice to World Stage with Alasdair Boyd

Livestream

At age 58, Alasdair Boyd entered the world of freediving as a complete novice. Less than a decade later, he would go on to represent the United States three times in international competition, earning two Gold and two Silver metals in the 2023 US Freediving Team Masters Division at the World Depth Freediving Championships and place a 3rd overall finish at the 2026 AIDA USA Pool Championships. In conversation at the Adventurers’ Club, Alasdair shares the journey from first certification to international competition, exploring the focus and discipline that transformed a late-life pursuit into a world-class endeavor.

Through stories spanning the California coast, the reefs of Baja, cenote depth competitions in the Yucatán, and dives across Hawaii, Greece, the Philippines, Bali, South Africa, Alasdair reflects on the global freediving community and the experiences that continue to shape him. The evening will explore training and preparation, aging and athletic performance, safety culture, and decision making under pressure. Drawing from backgrounds in the British Army, skydiving, BASE jumping, and aviation, he will discuss accident avoidance and the judgment required in high-risk environments.

Born in London in 1958, Alasdair Boyd spent his early years between Kenya, Corfu, Ireland, and England before attending the Royal Military Academy Sandhurst and serving as an officer in the 17/21st Lancers. His adventurous path has included competitive skydiving, BASE jumping across the United States, piloting aircraft coast to coast, working on advanced military parachute systems (HALO and HAHO) for Special Forces, and more than 25 years as a Hollywood location scout and manager. Since beginning freediving in 2016, he has become an AIDA Instructor, PFI Assistant Instructor, NAUI Skindiving Instructor, international competitor in Underwater Hockey, and one of the top-ranked freedivers in the country. Today, he continues pursuing new depth and endurance goals while advocating for safe, lifelong adventure.
