Cruising America’s Great Loop is a 12 month boating adventure by Adventurers’ Club members Michael and Barbara Lawler, circumnavigating the eastern third of the United States. They are pausing their trip and flying home to give us a progress report after completing the first quarter of the Great Loop.
The Lawlers started in Norfolk, VA, on June 19, and so far have cruised the Chesapeake Bay, the New Jersey Shore, the Hudson River, the Erie Canal, Canada’s Trent-Severn Waterway, and the Great Lakes.
One of the highlights was being at anchor in New York Harbor at the Statue of Liberty on the Fourth of July for the Parade of Tall Ships celebrating our nation’s 250th birthday. Another was navigating about 100 locks on the Erie Canal, the Oswego Canal and the Trent-Severn Waterway.

Come and see their photos and hear their stories as they loop their way around the eastern third of our country on “Chasing 80,” a Beneteau Swift Trawler 34. Past President Michael Lawler (Member 1195) and Barbara Lawler (Member 1245) are proudly carrying the Adventurers’ Cub Expedition Flag on their 6,000 nautical mile adventure.
In 2010, Michael and Barbara Lawler completed a three-year circumnavigation visiting 64 countries and six continents on their 47 ft. sailboat. They both have earned a 100-ton US Coast Guard Captain’s license, and have competed in hundreds of yachting races, including the famous Transpacific Yacht Race to Honolulu (Michael eight times and Barbara six times.)
Michael is the managing partner of Lawler & Milligan, an estate planning law firm in Newport Beach. Barbara is a retired seventh grade English teacher.
