There is a ritual at the Amundsen-Scott South Pole Station that after the last aircraft departs and the station is officially “closed” the winter crew will gather in the gym for a rite of passage. They will view all three versions of the movie “The Thing” and prepare for a long dark winter physically cut off from the world for over nine months. Wayne L. White member #1194
had the honor of being the South Pole winter manager and participating in this ritual for three Antarctic winters. Wayne will discuss why “The Thing” is the perfect movie to start a South Pole winter and his role in Ian Nathan’s “The Thing Expanded.” This movie set for release late spring 2026 has been described as: “The ultimate love letter to The Thing, the people who made it, and the communities who love it. Featuring brand new interviews with the original cast and crew, this will be the most detailed analysis ever made of your favorite film.”

And what about aliens running amok in Antarctica? Where did these allegations originate and are they true? Wayne will discuss his own experience during his nearly three years at the South Pole and the over 4300 miles he walked outside. The truth is out there!
