THE RICKSHAW RUN -2010

Imagine the fastest, safest, most earth-munching all-terrain vehicle in the world. Then imagine the opposite. Three wheels, half a horse power and more fun than any other vehicle on planet earth, the humble Rickshaw is undoubtedly the ultimate long distance, off-road machine. Despite being designed for short distances on road.

Now imagine the bliss of trying to get this untrusty steed over the Himalayas or across the Rajasthan desert. This then is the Rickshaw Run; an unsupported maniac of an adventure which wobbles over thousands of miles of ridiculous terrain. The most stupid and probably the best thing you could possibly do with two weeks.

Join Dennis Przywara as he shows his short film of "The Rickshaw Run," a 2,000-mile "no rules/no route" race across India that raises funds for charity!

September 22, 2011 - Craig Walters - Sudan Today

SUDAN, KENYA & JAPAN: RESPONSE TO DISASTER

Sudan is the scene of one of the most brutal civil wars in Africa. With the recent independence of Southern Sudan from the North, military action along the contested oil-rich border region has put a large population at risk, with thousands fleeing a surprise attack on the city of Abyei. Neighboring Kenya has also been in the news lately as thousands of Somalis have been crossing the border searching for relief from a 3 year drought-caused famine. Craig Walters was part of disaster response teams sent to these areas to help meet immediate needs for food and shelter.

Craig is a native of Southern California, having lived in La Verne all his life. At 22 he was elected to the City Council , the youngest in the City’s history, serving for 14 years. Over the past 30 years, he has produced documentary video projects in more than 60 countries, including many of the world’s poorest. Recently his work has involved covering early response to relief efforts in disaster areas. In addition to Africa, this has included 2 visits to Japan following the tsunami and a trip to areas destroyed by the earthquake in Haiti.

This program will include Craig’s observations, photos and video of these relief efforts and the pitfalls of providing humanitarian aid to some of the planet’s most desperate people.

Record Setter

Jackie Cochran rose from a poverty-stricken childhood to become one of history's most accomplished female aviators. Beginning work in a cotton mill at the age of six, Cochran labored at a series of jobs before answering her call to the air. She learned to fly in 1932 while working as a cosmetics saleswoman. Her future husband Floyd Odlum had told Cochran that flying would help her surpass her competition.

  • Flew in the London, England to Melbourne, Australia race in 1934.
  • In 1935, she became the first woman to fly in the Bendix Trophy Race, which she won in 1938.
  • Became the first woman to make a blind instrument landing in 1937.
  • Set new women's records during 1939-40, in altitude and open class speed.
  • During World War II she was the first woman to fly a bomber across the Atlantic Ocean, leading to the formation of the Women's Air Force Service Pilots (WASP) program for which she received the Distinguished Service Medal.
  • Received the Harmon Trophy in 1950 as the Aviatrix of the Decade.
  • In 1953, she became the first woman to exceed the speed of sound.
  • In 1962, subsequently setting 73 records in three years. She exceeded Mach 2 in 1964.
