Pierre Odier - Remote Tribes on Siberut Island, Flores Island and Komodo Island

Pierre’s wish and attempt to visit the very remote Mentawai tribe finally materialized after making the necessary contacts
that would enable him to travel to their Village.
In November of 2016 Pierre left Los Angeles and it took him 5 days of travel to reach this remote village of the Mentawai people
on Siberut Island.
The Island of Siberut of the Sumatra city of Padang could be reached with a 3 hours fast boat ride.
Today of the approximately 6000 Mentawai still living in Indonesia only 2000 practice their original traditional life
and can be found in the Jungle (rain forest) of Siberut Island.
In 1954 the natives were given an ultimatum forcing them to choose between the Christian religion or Muslim.
The majority chose the Christian faith because the Muslim religion doesn’t allow the killing of Pigs and
Pigs are at the center of their culture.
Those Meatawi’s who refused to give up their way of life where heavily persecuted.
Their homes burnt, the leaders killed and their cultural possessions destroyed.
This practice by the local Police and federal government continued until 1990 when the Government finally allowed them to
live freely and continue their traditional life style.
By now most of those survivors had retreated deep into the forest of Siberut Island.
This traditional authentic traditional way of life is precisely what Pierre was seeking to find,
and after living among them for 10 days can now share with a global audience part of a culture that managed to flee the
encroaching foreigner civilization and remain true to their old traditional way of life.
Biography:
Pierre Odier was born in Lausanne, Switzerland.
In 1959 he moved to the United Sates.
He joined the United States Army in the same year and became a communications specialist.
He served his last military years in the Northwest and was discharged in Tacoma, Washington.
He received his B.A. and teaching credentials from the University of Puget Sound in Tacoma, Washington,
M.F.A. California State of Los Angeles.
Upon completion of his teaching credentials he moved to Glendale, California,
to accept a teaching position at the Herbert Hoover High School in the Glendale Unified School District.
Pierre was the president of the National Photography Instructors Association (N.P.I.A.),
editor of a national photography publication,
member of the National College Board Fine Arts Committee and travels extensively as a lecturer and conference speaker.
He is the two time past president of The Adventurers’ Club of Los Angeles,
current president of the Adventurer Foundation and
a member of the Explorers Club Of New York.
Pierre Odier is actively pursuing travel to remote places of the world in order to document indigenous peoples.

We ask that all new members be prepared to take the microphone, introduce yourself, and briefly tell us about your life and adventures.
When all new members have been introduced;
ALL membership are asked to bring a small artifact, trinket or memento from you travels, and
tell us about the item and the story that led to its acquisition.
High adventure, danger and suspense are greatly appreciated, expected and anticipated.

Michael Lawler Whitewater Rafting Down the Zambezi
This past August, Adventurers' Club Member Michael Lawler #1195 and his wife Barbara Lawler went on safari in Kenya, Tanzania, Uganda, Zambia, Zimbabwe and Botswana.
Their big adventure was whitewater rafting down a series of Class 5 rapids on the Zambezi River, putting in just below Victoria Falls. The Zambezi is considered to be the wildest whitewater rafting experience in the world.
They also will share stories of their hot air balloon safari over the wildebeest migration across the Mara River, trekking through the Bwindi Impenetrable Forest to find a family of Mountain Gorillas, and delivering English textbooks to a school in a remote Masai village.
Michael Lawler is an estate planning attorney in Newport Beach. In 2010, Michael and Barbara completed a three-year circumnavigation on their 47 ft. sailboat, through the Suez and Panama Canals, visiting 61 countries on six continents.
