Detailed Calendar Page March 5, 2009 - Members Show Case Every two months in 2009, we will schedule a meeting to introduce and reintroduce our members to each other. We will allow about 5 minutes for each member to give a short history if his adventures and other comments. Tonight we will catch up with the three board members who missed the first Members Show Case on January 8, plus several other members. Each will have 7 minutes to talk plus two minutes for Q&A. The first Members Showcase was a fantastic success - come and get to know more of our members better. March 12, 2009 - Bora Ozkuk - Adventures in Turkey Bora, is a Berkeley educated architect and world-renowned teacher of Turkish culture, music, folk dance and folklore. He has authored several books, produced his own folk music albums (playing a variety of instruments), produced several videos on Turkey. He has appeared numerous times on Turkish national television and has given workshops and lectures on four continents and all over the United States. Andrea Donnellan - QuakeSim Principal Investigator
Andrea Donnellan is the Principal Investigator of the QuakeSim project. She is also a research professor at the University of Southern California. Donnellan uses GPS and InSAR satellite technology coupled with high performance computer models to study earthquakes, plate tectonics, and the corresponding movements of the earth's crust. She has been a geophysicist at JPL since 1993. She received a bachelor's degree from the Ohio State University in 1986, with a geology major and mathematics minor. She received her master's and Ph.D. in geophysics from Caltech's Seismological Laboratory in 1988 and 1991 respectively. Donnellan received an M.S. in Computer Science from the University of Southern California in 2003. Andrea Donnellan is a geophysicist at NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory and is a research professor at the University of Southern California. Andrea integrates satellite technology with high performance computer models to study earthquakes, plate tectonics, and the corresponding movements of the earth's crust. She is currently NASA's Applied Sciences Program Area Lead for Disaster Management, and Principal Investigator of NASA's QuakeSim and other projects. Donnellan has also been the Project Scientist of a mission to study natural hazards, ice sheets, and ecosystems, and Deputy Manager of the Laboratory's Science Division. She has conducted field studies in California in the region of the Northridge earthquake, the Ventura basin, and on the San Andreas fault. She has also carried out fieldwork on the West Antarctic Ice Streams, in the Dry Valleys, and in Marie Byrd Land of Antarctica, on the Altiplano of Bolivia, in Mongolia, and on Variegated Glacier in Alaska. Donnellan has a B.S degree in geology from the Ohio State University, an M.S. and Ph.D. in geophysics from Caltech, and an M.S. in Computer Science from USC. She held a National Research Council Postdoctoral Fellowship at NASA Goddard Space Flight Center and has been a Visiting Associate at the Seismological Laboratory at Caltech. In December 1996 Andrea received the Presidential Early Career Award for Scientists and Engineers, in 2003 the Women in Aerospace Award for Outstanding Achievement, in 2004 the Woman At Work Medal of Excellence, and in 2006 she was the MUSES of the California Science Center Foundation Woman of the Year. Andrea is an instrument rated commercial land and sea pilot and has flown in the U.S., Canada, Mexico, and Africa. She is also a SCUBA diver, and enjoys underwater and landscape photography, running, competitive ice skating, dancing ballet, playing the piano, and spending time with her son. Andrea has been a finalist in the astronaut selection process three times. Andrea is Secretary of the Byrd Aircraft Recovery Expedition, a non-profit organization to recover the first plane to land on the Antarctic continent as well as raise funds and awareness for Parkinson's Disease. In 1996 Andrea Donnellan participated in an expedition to conduct geological and geophysical observations of northwestern Mongolia.
The team started in Ulaanbaatar, the capitol of Mongolia and traveled to Lake Hovsgol where the group spent three days on the lake
taking mud core samples for climate studies.
The region overlies a tectonic hotspot, and has experienced several large earthquakes in the past century.
Because the rainfall is so low, the fault ruptures are well-preserved as are some volcanoes and lava flows.
Donnellan's talk will discuss the scientific observations and interactions with the local people of the region.
