Robert Owens - Forty Years of Adventure

Robert Owens Sailing the Mediterranean in 2001

Robert Owens
Sailing the Mediterranean in 2001

Robert Owens is a Seasoned Corporate Key Note Speaker, Leadership and Management Trainer, Business and Estate Mediator and "Crises Coach."

Robert has traveled to over 30 Countries teaching Leadership Development and Management Skill Training. Robert specializes in training developing countries leaders. Robert has flown over 4 million miles with American Airlines and their partners during these travels. He hopes to never fly on Aeroflot Airlines Domestically again.

He has spoken to the Philippines Joint Chiefs of Staff, the South African Parliament, as well as spoken and taught for President Violeta Chamaro of Nicaragua after the Contra-Sandinista war. His 10 trips to Moscow and 12 trips to Beijing have provided many memorable experiences and adventures.

Most recently, in the last 3 years, Robert has been teaching, speaking and lecturing to Communist Party officials in the Department of Foreign Affairs in Hanoi and Danang Vietnam.

Robert had a Television Program on a regional FOX affiliate for 22 years called "Leadership For Changing Times." As well he had a live daily radio talk program for many years.

Robert was raised in Anaheim and in Laguna Beach California. He was a Water Polo player and swimmer for Jon Urbanchek in High School, who went on to be the US Olympic Head Swimming Coach.

He rowed Crew for Orange Coast College and Paddled Outrigger Canoes for Dana Point Outrigger Club before turning twenty. He twice stroked the Dana Point team in the Catalina to Long Beach Outrigger Canoe Race before he turned 20.

In his early 20’s he joined the Air Force and became a USAF "Pararescueman," which is the Air Force equivalent of the Navy SEALS. Over 150 tried out in his Special Ops Class and 7 graduated.

After the Military service, Robert smuggled documents and materials into Eastern Europe and Helsinki Peace Accords documents out to the West during the Carter Administration. The smuggling equipped vehicles were custom outfitted here in the US, then traveled by boat to Amsterdam and then deployed to be used throughout the Soviet Union and Eastern Europe.

These are the foundations for many of Robert’s adventures.

Robert is also one of the so called Original Ironman Triathletes. Robert finished his first Ironman Triathlon in 1980 in Honolulu on the old Ironman Course. That was year 3 of the Ironman when there were 100 competitors. He finished the Race after passing out on the marathon course from dehydration, then getting up and finishing. This also just happened to be on his honeymoon. Notably, it was televised on Wide World of Sports.

He has finished 9 Ironman Triathlons, 8 in the last 12 years. Those include Kona Hawaii for the Ironman 25th World Championship Anniversary Race, Ironman South Africa, Ironman Florida, Ironman Mexico and Ironman Western Australia. He is preparing for Ironman Mexico again this year.

Robert will probably share on his attempted Winter ascent of Mt McKinley; taking many bodies off Mt McKinley by dog sled, helicopter and Cessna 182’s; his sailing across the Atlantic with 5 other guys and sailing the Med; his Arctic Scuba Jumps and other adventures.

Lastly, Robert had his life radically impacted in a 9th grade High School Assembly when he heard John Goddard speak and present on of his adventures on the Nile. John read his list of 100 or so adventures he had hoped to experience and accomplish and Robert knew he wanted to be like John Goddard. It did not happen like that but Robert got the bug to continually get off the beaten path and find adventure.

Here is a short list of some of the other adventures Robert has experienced:

  1. "Angel Walking" down the face of a 24 story skyscraper in Gold Coast Australia.
  2. Parachuting with Tiger Woods.
  3. Diving with Great Whites twice in South Africa.
  4. Level 5 white water rafting on the Zambezi River with crocs.
  5. Jumping off the "then highest" Bungee jump in the world in Africa.
  6. Was Ocean Lifeguard in High School and had his first person die in his arms at 16 and second person die in his arms at 17.
  7. Had his life radically change putting an Army Major in body bag and delivering him to his wife and kids.
  8. Paddling down the Orange River in Namibia, Africa.
  9. Snowboarding outside Beijing.
  10. Traveling to a "hidden or invisible city" in the Soviet Union where they put the nuclear warheads on the SS 22’s rockets during Reagan's SALT talks with the Soviet Union.

Robert’s greatest adventure was raising his 5 children. For his 50th birthday, they had a family skydive.

Ladies Night - Open Thursday - Morris Price
Holocaust Survivor: Experience in Auschwitz, Dachau

Morris Price

Morris Price

The Adventurers’ Club of Los Angeles has organized an important event in which Holocaust survivor Morris Price who was personally imprisoned will share his incredible story and his experiences in the Nazi concentration camps of Auschwitz and Dacau.

It is important that we remember what these people went through and to listen to their stories and learn from them. We will not have very many opportunities to actually talk to somebody who survived Auschwitz or Dachau and as long as we have these opportunities, we need to make use of them and listen and learn.

Morris Price, a Polish Jew who was only a teenager when he and his family members were forced to work in labor camps and then ultimately moved to a concentration camp, has spoken numerous times at Los Angeles’ Museum of Tolerance because he finds it meaningful when he can share his testimony with people who might not have previously known about the Holocaust - we should never forget and the stories be told so that we don’t forget.

Morris Price was born Moniek Prajs on April 27, 1927. He was raised by his parents, Manela and Itka Prajs and was the youngest child of three sisters and two brothers. His father was a cattleman who bought cows from farmers and resold them to butchers. Because his father owned his own horse and buggy, his family was considered to be middle class. In addition to his immediate family, his grandparents also lived in his house.

Though the city of Wolbrom was rather small, it boasted a fair-sized Jewish population. However, life changed quickly for Morris when he was just twelve years old in 1939 when Germany occupied Poland and anti-Jewish laws went in to effect. Morris was not allowed to attend public school and was prohibited from attending theatre or participating in sports with other Poles.

At the same time, his brothers were forced to do hard labor. In the summer of 1942, Morris’ family received a notice that they were going to be resettled. Two of his sisters decided to go in to hiding and one of his father’s friends, a farmer in Wolbrom, came to their house and agreed to hide the sisters despite the personal risk. Morris and the rest of his family reported to the designated field for resettlement. His father was sent to a labor camp while his mother, sister, and grandmother were sent elsewhere. Morris, just 15 at that time, was sent with his brothers to a different labor camp just outside Krakow, Poland, where their job was to construct railroad tracks.

While in the labor camp, Morris overheard that there was going to be a final liquidation in Wolbrom, so he decided to sneak away to the city to inform his sisters. Morris was successful in warning his sisters and one cousin to leave Wolbrom. The amazing life action and experiences he went through during the war and after make a compelling story of the horrors of the holocaust.

We will travel with Morris through his stay at Auschwitz-Birkenau concentration camp, then to Dachau on a Death March. His actions and experiences kept him and most of his siblings alive. His parents were lost in the Death Camps and gas chambers.

Morris speaks at the Museum of Tolerance because he finds it meaningful when he can share his testimony with younger people and others who might not have previously know about the Holocaust.

Mr. Price was a teenager when the Nazis began to imprison people. His story is moving and amazing. He makes history seem alive. He led an amazing life. He came within a hairs breath of going to the gas chambers. His moving story will be something you will long remember. He now lives with his wife Shirley, in Culver City.

His story is one we should all hear.

One can explore the array of year-round active adventure pursuits available in Turkey, including white-water rafting, trekking, ballooning, yachting and skiing; as well as a huge variety of other things to experience in Turkey: Turkish baths and spas, nature and wildlife and shopping and nightlife just to name a few!

Istanbul is Turkey’s largest city (approx. 12 million) and the country’s undisputed cultural and financial center. Gearing up for its title of European Capital of Culture, Istanbul offers a great deal in the way of history, culture, food and entertainment, in fact far too much to take in on a short city break. You will need to come back time and time again to truly see all that this atmospheric city has to offer and it’s a great city to visit as part of a twin-center holiday.
