The voyage on the M/V Spirit of Enderby originated in Bluff, South Island, New Zealand, cruised south to the Aucklands Islands, also Macquarie Island then into the Ross Sea after crossing the Antarctic Circle in the Southern Ocean. The highlight of the cruise was visiting the expedition huts of British polar explorers Scott and Shackleton after multiple attempts to get through the ice. On the return trip north we visited Campbell Island, the Snares, and Stewart Island before returning to Bluff. On the cruise we sighted numerous seabirds including petrels, albatrosses, and skuas as well as various species of penguins including Kings, Emperors, Royals, Adelies and Gentoos. Numerous seals, sea lions, and killer whales were also encountered.

Rich Abele is a former Contracts and Export Compliance professional who supported various military aircraft production programs including the B-1B Lancer bomber and the C-17 airlifter at Rockwell International Corporation and most recently The Boeing Company in Long Beach, CA. He retired in 2005 after 32 years of service.

Follow Your Dreams - Regardless of Obstacles
  • Dave Barr has done what most only dream of doing!

    photo of David Barr

Inspired by John Goddard, inspirational speaker, warrior and friend- circumnavigated the world on a Harley 9 months after his legs were blown off- Nothing stops this man once he makes up his mind and he teaches that.

Traveling around the world is a huge accomplishment, but only the beginning of Dave Barr’s incredible story. His solo motorcycle journey took three and a half years to complete and spanned six continents and 83,000 miles. What makes it truly remarkable is that Dave made the trip on a 1972 Harley-Davidson® motorcycle with two prosthetic legs, the result of an 1981 land mine explosion. He pushed his way through the Sahara, Namibia, and Gobi deserts, slipped through the Andes during avalanche season and braved the unique challenges of riding across China, Russia, Australia, and Africa.

Dave later went on to establish a Guinness Book World Record for crossing northern Europe, Russia and Siberia on a motorcycle in the dead of winter. Dave uses his experiences to tell story after touching story. His life lessons will enrich and empower you as he shares how he brought his vision to life by setting goals, staying focused, and overcoming obstacles.

Dave Barr sets New World Record!
Dave’s most recent adventure earned him a second Guinness World Record. This time he went to Australia on his "Southern Cross" journey. In just 45 days, he completed the first motorcycle journey ever between the four extreme geographical corners of the Australian continent. A documentary is currently in the works about this amazing trip

Dave Barr holds the distinction of being:

  • An individual who has served in active duty in the U.S. Marine Corps in Vietnam and also served in the armed forces of three other nations.
  • The first double amputee skydiver in the world.
  • The only disabled person to have ridden around the world on a motorcycle.
  • The first person to have ridden a Harley-Davidson Motorcycle around the world.
  • The first person to establish a Guinness Book World Record for traveling by motorcycle across Europe, Russia, and Siberia in the dead of winter.
  • Robert Young Pelton
The Adventurist: My Life in Dangerous Places
  • Author, filmmaker, journalist, and adventurer Robert Young Pelton continues to overcome extraordinary obstacles in his search for the truth. In his travels to and through the world's most dangerous places, Pelton shares risks with his hosts, and is often the sole surviving witness to history-shaping events.

    Ladies Night
Pierre Odier - 85 Days on the Silk Road by Land Rover

    photo of Pierre Odier

    Pierre Odier

The Silk Road was once one of the world’s most significant commercial arteries spanning the entire length of Asia. Marco Polo created a permanent significance to the trade route between Europe and Asia. Not on camels like Marco Polo but with modern Land Rovers Discoveries we set out to drive the entire Silk Road tracing the same route as was established some 4000 years ago.

Driving the 20,000 Kilometers in our Land Rovers took us 85 days of constant driving. Starting from Venice Italy and ending up in Beijing China, required us to travel thru 13 countries. From Italy we drove to Slovenia, Croatia, Serbia, Bulgaria, Romania, Hungary, Turkey, Georgia, Armenia, Georgia, Azerbaijan, Turkmenistan, Uzbekistan, Kyrgyzstan ending up crossing the entire Taklamakan Desert ending up in Xian just to continue to our final destination Beijing China.

Understanding the vast history of the many civilizations that made its way thru that territory either thru force or by merger with established civilizations will require so much more time than the 85 days it took us to follow their established landmarks. All the traveling Merchants, War lords, Invaders and ancient Civilizations that date back to prehistoric times left an overwhelming amount of history to ponder and interpret.

The Marco Polo Silk Road route as romantic as it sounds today has effected many cultures of today in a permanent way.
