For the past decade and a half, Jim Dorsey, (# 1081) has visited some of the most remote peoples on earth. In his work as a travel writer, he has not only made the world aware that such people exist, but has given voice to many that have no written language. In tonight’s presentation you will travel by camel and elephant, meet stone-age hunter/gatherers, desert nomads, hermit monks, heavily armed tribesmen, and witness mystical ceremonies of shamanism and voodoo. Jim has written two books, and published 450 essays and articles about his travels. He has written for Lonely Planet, The BBC, United Airlines, Christian Science Monitor, Los Angeles Times, and Colliers, to name just a few publications. He is a fellow of the Explorer’s Club, and former Vice President and Director of the Adventurers’ Club who named him "Adventurer of the Year" in 2009.

Ever wondered what the training facilities and primary launch site of the Russia space program are like? In September 2016, Rich Abele, #1172, will be traveling to Russia to participate in an exclusive tour inside Russia’s space program sites. He will tour the Yuri Gagarin Cosmonaut Training Center in Star City (near Moscow), the premier training facility for Russian cosmonauts and foreign astronauts. Next he will explore the MIR Space Station simulator, visit the Soyuz-TMA integrated simulator and the International Space Station (ISS) mock-up, learn how the crews acquire the skills to walk in space, and tour the Star City Museum, which contains space vehicles, simulators, space suits and a reproduction of Yuri Gagarin’s office. After touring Moscow’s Space Exploration Museum, his tour group will travel on a special flight to the Baikonur Cosmodrome located on the steppe of Kazakhstan to witness and participate in a rocket launch to the ISS. They will witness the roll-out of the Soyuz rocket, follow it to the launch pad and view the raising of the rocket together with the press, military personnel, cosmonauts and their relatives. Rich will meet the cosmonaut crew at a press conference and be able to ask questions of the ISS crew. Tours of the extensive launch facility will also be taken. On launch day Rich’s group will visit the Buran hangar where the rockets are assembled and tour the Energia and Proton launch pads. Finally, he will witness the actual launch of the cosmonauts aboard the Soyuz space vehicle as it blasts off to the ISS. Then it is onto the Mission Control Center to watch the satellite feed of the Soyuz docking. Don’t forget to make a dinner reservation and invite your friends. This is a presentation on an exotic subject that you will not want to miss. BiographyRich Abele is former aerospace executive and retired Captain in the US Navy.
