February 17, 2011 - Michael Fitzpatrick - A Most Unusual Musical Adventure

An adventure beyond what we usually see!

Join us for a unique Adventurers Club night. Michael Fitzpatrick is at the forefront of utilizing music to inspire peace and will be speaking about his extensive travels and will include a short musical performance.

With encouragement by the Dalai Lama, Michael Fitzpatrick, a world class cellist, conceived and arranged for the recording of songs and chants in the Star Chamber of Mammoth Cave in Kentucky with Buddist and Trappist Monks and Michaels Cello, plus more recordings at the Furnace Mountain Zen Temple and the Abbey of Gethsemani.

Michael will talk of his experiences as a critical part of the cooperative event, talk of his music and also play his cello. It promises to be a truly memorable and unique night at the Adventurers Club of Los Angeles.

The following links should give some idea of the range of his talents, activities and adventures not normally presented at the club. Michaels interests, activities and accomplishments go beyond the description:

Fitzpatrick performed at the United Nations Millennium Summit of Religious & Spiritual Leaders; the Parliament of the World's Religions in Barcelona in conjunction with Nobel Peace Prize laureate Shirin Ebadi, and at the recent Parliament of World's Religions in Melbourne with His Holiness the Dalai Lama. Performed at the Site of Christ's Baptism at Bethany-beyond the Jordan, at the Dead Sea, and for His Majesty King Abdullah II at the Royal Palace in Jordan as part of the Global Summit on Peace hosted by the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan.

Fitzpatrick designed and performed the sacred music for The Gethsemani Encounter led by His Holiness the XIVth Dalai Lama, involving the world's monastic leaders from East & West and held at the Abbey of Gethsemani - home of the late Thomas Merton. His nine solo performances during the historic 6-day summit were deemed the high point of The Gethsemani Encounter, and led to the invitation to produce COMPASSION, the first East-West recording in history between the traditions of ancient Tibetan Chant and Trappist/Gregorian-Chant.

He served as featured Soloist, Music Director, Film Director and Producer for the unprecedented musical collaboration recorded and filmed at sacred sites including Mammoth Cave, the largest cave in the world; the Abbey of Gethsemani; and the Furnace Mountain Zen Temple.

MICHAEL FITZPATRICK is the recipient of the Prince Charles Award for Outstanding Musicianship bestowed by H.R.H. the Prince of Wales. An acclaimed concert-cellist and electric-cellist, his performances have been featured on television on PBS' The News Hour with Jim Lehrer and the recent PBS special THE MUSIC INSTINCT: Science and Song, and on NPR/National Public Radio. Fitzpatrick has performed around the world including in the former Soviet Union, Australia, Spain, France, Italy, Jordan, India, Romania, and Switzerland. He has conducted numerous concert-tours across the United States and Canada, highlighted by performances at the Hollywood Bowl, the National Cathedral in Washington, D.C. the Aspen Music Festival, the Spoleto Festival of Two Worlds, Lincoln Center, Merkin Concert Hall, Town Hall, the Smithsonian Institution, the Dorothy Chandler Pavilion, the House of Blues Hollywood, and at the Saddledome in Calgary.

February 24, 2011 - Ladies Night - Nuclear Sub Night
Fredrick G. Hareland #1138
Robert Williscroft #1116

Two of our own step up!

Commander Gerald N. Miranda and ETCM (SS) COB Neil Davenport, who were originally scheduled to present, have been reassigned and ordered to report to their new stations. We are fortunate indeed that two of our esteemed members have committed to share their nuclear submarine experiences with us on this night.

Mark your calendars and don't miss this meeting which promises to be a memorable event comprising two speakers, both talking about different aspects of nuclear fast attack submarines. You can also bring your wives or female friends because this will be a Ladies Night!

RALPH WHITE and Electronic/Communications Officer
FREDRICK G. HARELAND’S SUBMARINE ADVENTURE

Saturday, January 2, 2010 Los Angeles Times, Page One, Column One ,
Death didn't stop his world travels - Page A20 next to the last paragraph - White's friends and family intend to keep him in motion.
If all goes according to plan, they say, some ashes may soon find their way aboard a nuclear submarine.

LA Times Article - Death Didn't Stop His World Travels Christopher Reynold's human interest story in the LA Times about the posthumous travels of our late and esteemed member, Ralph B. White # 942, only mentioned the possibility of a nuclear submarine ride for Ralph in his excellent article; however all went according to plan.

Fredrick took Ralph covertly onboard with him for a December 18, 2010, dependents cruise on the USS Asheville, SSN-758. The Los Angeles Class Fast Attack sub left the Point Loma Submarine Base at 08:30, steamed out to sea about 15 miles straight off of Ballast Point for some underway time for the crew, "Ralph" and Fredrick. They arrived back in port and moored by 16:00, but their underway time on the Asheville was a real "E"-Ticket adventure for Fredrick and Ralph.

Fredrick is indebted to Senior Master Chief (SS) Neil Davenport who, as the sub's Chief of the Boat or COB, made it possible for Ralph and Fredrick to accompany them on the dependents cruise. Ralph was a covert mission of Fredrick's, and Neil knew nothing about him or his final disposition. Come to Nuclear Submarine Night to find out the exciting details about Ralph and Fredrick’s submarine adventure and about Ralph's burial at sea!

In addition to serving in the U.S. Navy he has also served aboard ships in the U.S. Coast Guard, Military Sealift Command, Maersk Line Limited, and Norwegian Cruise Line where he was slated to become the first Electronic/Communications Officer assigned to the Project America vessel "Pride of America".
