Graham Mackintosh - Further Baja Adventures

Graham Mackintosh was born in London and graduated from Leeds University with a degree in Sociology. He is the author of four books on Baja California.

In 1983 Graham Mackintosh was a lecturer at West Kent College in England, teaching social sciences and special education to unemployed teenagers. In the hope of showing his students that a shoestring expedition could be the adventure of a lifetime, Mackintosh, who described himself as the "least adventurous person in the world," set out to walk around the coast of Baja, surviving off the sea and the desert.

The almost two-year, 3,000-mile trip changed his life. Graham returned to England, where he wrote his first book, Into a Desert Place, and there received the prestigious "Adventurous Traveler of the Year" award.

In 1997, he walked from the border to Loreto with a pack burro, visiting many of the old missions along the way. His trip, which took him mostly down the rugged, mountainous interior of Baja, began exactly 300 years after the October 1697 founding of the Loreto mission, the first permanent European settlement in the "Californias."
Journey with a Baja Burro, his second book, was the result.

In 2001, Graham spent four months in Baja’s Sierra San Pedro Mártir with two adopted street dogs, which led to his third book – Nearer My Dog to Thee.

Book number four, Marooned With Very Little Beer, appeared in April 2008, and tells of his two months kayaking and hiking the second largest island in the Sea of Cortez – Isla Angel de la Guarda (Guardian Angel Island).

He continues to head to Baja whenever he can, and is currently working on a new book describing his return to places he has found particularly fascinating. Graham Mackintosh has lived in San Diego for 20 years. He became a US citizen in 2004.

David McAlexander
"THESE ARE NOT THE MiGs YOU’RE LOOKING FOR…"

• A Newbie's account of his personal role in 2 of the most prominent Shootdowns of Operation Desert Storm

Fresh out of college David trained to fly with an elite Air Superiority unit based at what was then the center of the Dogfighting universe - NAS Miramar, aka "FighterTown USA." Six months later, flying off an Aircraft Carrier for the first time, he was thrust into a front line role in the most intense air combat since Vietnam, fighting for control of the most heavily defended airspace this side of Moscow.

Unhampered by any actual prior experience, he got to help the graybeards ditch dated warplans for nuclear conflict with the Soviets and try to adapt the Navy’s systems and tactics to a new and confounding combat environment for which they were not designed. Like usually happens with both fancy electronics and the elaborate plans laid by men, few things went as well as planned.

Come hear from David how it was thru a tragicomedy of errors, breakdowns, bad luck and sheer randomness that he almost helped kill Saddam Hussein in the process of running the intercept resulting in the US Navy’s only F-14 Tomcat air-to-air kill of the war, and how he helped save the Battleship USS Missouri (then still in service 45 years after the treaty ending WWII was signed on her quarterdeck) from missile attack in what remains the world’s only successful missile-on-missile engagement at sea.

Ladies Night Dr. Roy Roush, PhD. - Living History, Ancient Artifacts and Combat Experience.

Member #864 Roy Roush.
WWII Veteran of Guadalcanal, Tarawa, Saipan, and Tinian will share and share insight and details of his combat experience in our intimate setting. Roy will provide genuine historical relics and weapons for your inspection.

After his time in the Marine Corp., Roy was an Air Force pilot with plenty of colorful experiences, including a near fatal jet fighter crash landing, which forensically uncovered a design flaw, preventing future fatalities.

Roy pursued gold, gem and fossil prospecting for may years, writing and teaching about his techniques and adventures.

He earned a Ph.D in Biblical Archeology from St. Charles University in 2002 and was knighted by The Knights of St. John of Jerusalem... His airplane went to the junk pile but some small pieces of his engine are still being used as paperweights on his desk!

A colorful character if ever there was one, Roy's warm and endearing style will leave a lasting impression.

Roy has books.
Open Fire, The Knights of the Golden Circle, Knights of the Golden Circle Treasure Signs, The Mysterious and Secret Order of the Knights of the Golden Crcle, Jesse James and Lost Treasures of the Knights of the Golden Circles, Who Killed Jesse James, Prospecting for Gold (video).

Bill Altaffer - Siberian UNESCO sites

Member #1095 Bill Altaffer.
Siberian trip I visit several UNESCO sites. Of which I hold the world record for visiting the most world sites.

One highlight is the Mushroom Rocks of the Altay. The Altay is one of Siberias most attractive oblasts or states. It has high, year round snow capped mountains. The Ob river Russia's fourth longest, starts in the Altay. Most roads are dirt. Next to Mongolia and Kazakhstan it's a place where you can see shamans and throat singer. One of the club favorites. Don't miss this extraordinary presentation.
